What is Shut the Box?

Shut the Box is a traditional pub dice game played on a box of numbered tiles: you roll two dice and shut any combination of open tiles adding up to your roll, and your turn ends when you cannot match a roll. Your score is the sum of the tiles left open, the lowest score wins, and clearing every tile is a perfect game — “shutting the box”.

This version gives you both standard boards (9 and 12 tiles), a daily challenge where everyone gets the same dice, and an optional hint engine showing the mathematically optimal move for your exact position. Shut the Box is a solved game, and the same solver that powers those hints produced the numbers on our strategy and odds page: optimal play averages 11.66 points on the nine-tile board and shuts the box roughly once every 14 games.

How to play Shut the Box

  1. Roll the dice

Tap Roll dice to throw two six-sided dice. Their total is what you must match with tiles.

  2. Shut tiles adding up to your roll

Tap any combination of open tiles that adds up to exactly your total — a roll of 8 can shut 8, or 1+7, or 3+5, or 1+3+4 — then confirm to shut them.

  3. Roll one die once every tile left is 6 or lower

When all your remaining tiles are 6 or below the game switches to a single die automatically, which gives you a much better chance of matching.

  4. Keep going until you are stuck

Your turn ends when no combination of open tiles can make your roll. Your score is the sum of the tiles still open, and the lowest score wins.

  5. Shut every tile for a perfect game

Clearing the whole board scores zero and is called shutting the box. With optimal play it happens about once in every 14 games on the nine-tile board.

Questions about playing here

Can I play Shut the Box online for free?

Yes. This site is a free browser version of Shut the Box with no account, no download and no app. The board is ready to play the moment the page loads, on a phone as well as a computer.

Can I play Shut the Box with the keyboard?

Yes. Press the number keys to select tiles (0 for 10, minus for 11, equals for 12), Space or Enter to roll and to confirm a move, Escape to clear your selection, H to toggle hints and M to mute.

Does this version have the 9-tile and 12-tile boards?

Both. Tap 9 tiles or 12 tiles above the board to switch at any time. Nine tiles is the traditional pub game; twelve tiles is longer and far harder to shut completely.

What is the daily challenge?

Every player in the world gets the same dice each day, so the game becomes a shared puzzle you can compare rather than a private roll. Finishing it builds a daily streak, and you can share your result as a grid of squares.

What is the hint button for?

Hints show the mathematically optimal tiles to shut for your exact position. Shut the Box is a solved game, so the hint is computed from a full solution of the board rather than a rule of thumb — the full analysis is on the strategy page.

Are the dice fair?

Yes. Rolls use your browser’s cryptographic random number generator with rejection sampling, so each of the six faces is exactly equally likely. Nothing is weighted for or against you.
